San Diego County, California

San Diego County, located at the southwestern corner of the continental United States along the Mexican border, is the second most populous county in California and the fifth most populous in the nation, with an estimated population of approximately 3.3 million residents. The county encompasses 4,526 square miles of territory that includes 70 miles of Pacific coastline, fertile coastal valleys, mountain ranges reaching above 6,500 feet, and the Anza-Borrego Desert on the eastern slope. San Diego's identity is shaped by its military heritage (it is home to the largest concentration of naval power in the world), its world-class biotech industry, its proximity to Mexico, and its famously mild climate.

The county contains 18 incorporated cities, with the City of San Diego (population approximately 1.4 million) serving as both the county seat and the eighth largest city in the United States. Other significant cities include Chula Vista (275,000), Oceanside (180,000), Escondido (155,000), Carlsbad (115,000), and Vista (100,000).

Military and Defense

The U.S. military is the single largest economic force in San Diego County, with defense-related spending accounting for a substantial portion of the regional economy. San Diego has been a major naval base since the early twentieth century, and today the county hosts the largest concentration of military assets on the West Coast:

Naval Base San Diego is the principal homeport of the Pacific Fleet's surface combatants, hosting dozens of destroyers, cruisers, amphibious assault ships, and littoral combat ships. Naval Air Station North Island on Coronado is the birthplace of naval aviation and home to multiple aircraft carrier strike groups. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, covering approximately 125,000 acres of northern San Diego County coastline, is the Marine Corps' largest expeditionary base and home to approximately 38,000 Marines and 25,000 family members. Marine Corps Air Station Miramar hosts fighter jet squadrons and the annual Miramar Air Show. The Navy's Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), now Naval Information Warfare Systems Command (NAVWAR), develops communications and information technology systems.

The military presence generates extensive demand for housing, commercial construction, and maintenance services. Contractors and tradespeople in HVAC, electrical, and plumbing serve both military facilities and the residential communities that house service members and their families.

Biotechnology and Life Sciences

San Diego's biotechnology cluster, centered in the Torrey Pines and Sorrento Valley areas, is among the largest and most innovative in the world. The cluster emerged from the concentration of world-class research institutions in the region, including the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Scripps Research, the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, and the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). These institutions produce foundational research that has been commercialized by hundreds of biotech companies operating in the region.

Major biotech and pharmaceutical companies with significant San Diego operations include Illumina (the global leader in DNA sequencing technology), Qualcomm (which originated as a wireless telecommunications company but has expanded into life sciences), Dexcom (a leader in continuous glucose monitoring), and numerous clinical-stage pharmaceutical companies. The biotech sector's specialized facility needs -- including cleanrooms, laboratories, and controlled manufacturing environments -- drive demand for commercial construction expertise.

Tourism

Tourism is a major economic driver in San Diego County, generating billions of dollars in annual visitor spending. The San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park, operated by the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, are among the most visited zoological facilities in the world. Balboa Park, a 1,200-acre urban cultural park in the heart of San Diego, houses 17 museums, multiple performing arts venues, gardens, and the zoo, making it one of the largest and most comprehensive urban parks in the United States. LEGOLAND California in Carlsbad, SeaWorld San Diego, and the historic Gaslamp Quarter downtown are additional major attractions.

The county's beaches -- from Del Mar and La Jolla in the north through Mission Beach and Pacific Beach to Coronado and Imperial Beach in the south -- draw millions of visitors annually. The hospitality industry supports a large workforce of hotels, restaurants, and visitor services throughout the county.

International Border

San Diego County shares a 60-mile border with Mexico, and the San Ysidro port of entry is the busiest land border crossing in the Western Hemisphere, processing approximately 70,000 northbound crossers daily. The Otay Mesa commercial crossing handles billions of dollars in annual trade. This proximity to Tijuana (population approximately 2 million) creates a binational metropolitan area of more than 5 million people with deeply intertwined economies, labor markets, and cultural connections. Cross-border commerce, manufacturing (particularly in the maquiladora factories on the Mexican side), and the daily commute of thousands of workers in both directions make the border a defining characteristic of the regional economy.

Key Cities and Communities

City of San Diego

The City of San Diego (1.4 million) is geographically vast, stretching from La Jolla and the Torrey Pines area in the north through downtown, Mission Valley, and Point Loma to the border communities in the south. Downtown San Diego has experienced a renaissance of residential and commercial development, with the Gaslamp Quarter, East Village, and Little Italy neighborhoods attracting residents and visitors.

Chula Vista

Chula Vista (275,000) is the second largest city in the county and the fourteenth largest in California, located between San Diego and the Mexican border. The city has experienced rapid growth in its eastern Otay Ranch development area.

North County Communities

The North County communities of Oceanside (180,000), Escondido (155,000), Carlsbad (115,000), Vista (100,000), and San Marcos (100,000) form a distinct subregion with a blend of suburban residential development, agriculture, military influence (Camp Pendleton is in northern Oceanside), and tourism (Carlsbad's LEGOLAND and flower fields). The region's landscaping industry thrives in the Mediterranean climate.

Education and Research

The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is a top-tier public research university with enrollment exceeding 40,000 students and annual research expenditures exceeding $1.5 billion, making it one of the most research-intensive universities in the nation. San Diego State University (approximately 35,000 students) is the county's other major four-year public university. The University of San Diego and Point Loma Nazarene University are significant private institutions.
